On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 for nasty, 10 for nice), how would you rate yourself?

I go from 1 to 10 in just about everything I do in my life. From nasty to nice, to nice to nasty, I don't particularly try to be a nasty person. It just happens.

What have your students said about you?
They like the fact that I pay attention to what they are all about… that I can go ahead and explain to them. Make them feel more comfortable in learning instead of ‘ja ja ja ja' (nagging sound).

How prepared are you to face criticisms from the public?
Bring it on. That's it. Just bring it on.

What kind of contestant behaviour is a big turn-off?
If people shut down and don't take it as a learning experience. It's not good for them. And if it's not good for them, it's not good for me. I mean if they don't listen, then what's the point, right?

What do you think is the most important attribute for a dancer?
Energy and passion. We don't want to see robots.

What are some big no-nos on the dance floor?
No nudity, no profanity, no broken limbs of your partner, no slapping, no verbal abuse. Aside from that, anything goes. You shouldn't be mouthing lyrics. It just shows the person is an amateur. Most professional dancers know the music, the steps and I'm sure these people know as well.

What can contestants do to impress you?
Don't just do the movements. Go ahead and feel what they are doing and give something more than a movement. A pirouette is a pirouette. Anybody can do that. It's how you tweak it and how you wrap it up – it's the character of the dance. I just need to see the passion and the energy. The innovation is very important and the entertainment factor.

Which dance would you not be caught dead performing?
Ahh…Pole dancing. I just don't look good enough on a pole. I've got too many lumps.

What, to you, is the most challenging dance form?
All of them. A ballet dancer is gonna find it difficult to do some hip hop movement and a hip hop dancer is gonna find it difficult to do some classical movement. A jazz dancer is gonna find it very difficult to do some eclectic dancing. There is no particular style that is harder than the other. They are all difficult for a person who is trained in a different dance. You must get used to that.

What was your biggest sacrifice as a dancer?
I remember a performance at the University of California of Davis . We were doing The Wizard of Oz . I was the scarecrow. I went down on my hands and then I jumped. And I slipped on the floor cos' we were barefoot. I hit my backside and I had to perform the whole concert. Afterwards. I couldn't even move. It hurt that bad. I took one month to recover!

What is the major obstacle faced by any dancer?
Lack of confidence. If you don't have the confidence, you're gonna be shaking. You'll not gonna be able to perform as best as you could.

How can a dancer build up confidence?
Perform in front of friends. Have confidence in the choreography that you have. And when you are looking out there in the audience, just pretend that everybody else out there is a little child and you are just performing for a kid. Don't think of them as people who are above you.
